Alibaba has unveiled the "Qin 3.8-27B" AI model, which can run locally on personal computers, aiming to compete with Meta in the open-weight model market. The model contains 27 billion parameters and is capable of handling text, images, and videos. It can perform multi-step tasks within a contextual window of up to one million tokens. The idea behind this is to reduce reliance on internet connectivity, lower costs, and give users greater control over their data. Additionally, a compressed version has been introduced to enable running on less powerful devices. This development marks a shift in the AI industry from full dependence on data centers to running some processes locally on devices, boosting flexibility and empowering developers to customize and enhance models.
