ChatGPT Ads Raise Access and Privacy Issues
OpenAI has launched a testing phase for ads within ChatGPT in an effort to expand its revenue streams. The company is beginning to display contextually relevant ads based on the conversation and user intent, while ensuring a clear separation between ad content and responses. The plan also includes introducing a new format that allows users to start direct conversations with AI agents representing advertisers, aiming to support free access and reduce reliance on paid subscriptions. This shift has sparked debates around data privacy and trust in the model, amid criticism from lawmakers and resignations within the company. Despite these challenges, OpenAI foresees advertising as a primary future source of income, although security and ethical concerns related to using conversation context for targeted ads remain significant considerations.
