Bolsonaro advances to Brazil runoff
An official source from the Brazilian Electoral Commission announced that Senator Flávio Bolsonaro will face the current President, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, in the runoff round of the presidential election. After counting over 97% of the votes, Bolsonaro achieved 47.45%, surpassing expectations, while Lula received 44.66%. As a result, neither candidate secured more than 50% of the votes in the first round, necessitating a runoff on October 25. The campaigns are centered on Brazilian citizens' concerns over rising living costs, corruption, and security, with the candidates adjusting their campaign platforms amidst a fierce political polarization that reflects a struggle between left and right forces in the region.
