Spain plans general strike over housing crisis
Spanish labor unions have called for a general strike on November 11th to protest rising housing and rental costs, amid an escalating housing crisis that led to the eviction of an elderly woman who later passed away. Investment companies have sought to increase rents by 275%. The strike aims to demand affordable rents and decent housing. It occurs in the context of growing protests against the doubling of property and rent prices, estimated at around 90% over the past decade, as well as a rise in inflation to 4.9%. There have also been criticisms of the government regarding housing policies believed to favor speculators. The housing crisis is increasingly becoming a political issue ahead of early elections, with continued mass protests and tense relations between the government and opposition over housing policies.
