U.S. State Dept. Begins Mobile Cinema in Tunisia
The U.S. State Department has launched an initiative to commemorate the 50th anniversary of filming scenes from the "Star Wars" movie in Tunisia. This includes organizing an American cinema tour featuring a traveling cinema screening on Djerba Island, aiming to celebrate the film's history and connect the Tunisian filming locations with global cinematic culture. Locations in southern Tunisia, such as Touzen, Nefta, and Maatmata, were used to depict the planet Tatooine. This heritage has become an opportunity to bolster cultural tourism and revive the community role of cinema through mobile screenings, similar to previous initiatives in Tunisia supporting cultural decentralization. This initiative coincides with 2026, marking fifty years since the start of filming "Star Wars" in Tunisia. It highlights the significance of these filming sites as part of a global cinematic memory and underscores Tunisia’s challenge in leveraging this legacy to enhance tourism and cultural development.
