WMO warns of declining freshwater
The World Meteorological Organization has warned of a decline in freshwater resources worldwide, noting that 2025 recorded one of the highest levels of drought in 35 years, with river flows falling 36% below average across the water basin areas. It pointed out that groundwater reserves and glaciers have been steadily decreasing for nearly eight years, with glaciers losing snow for the fourth consecutive year, especially in Central Asia, Iceland, northern Russia, western Canada, and the United States. The organization urged governments to prepare for rapid climate changes that lead to extreme water patterns, warning that the depletion of water resources — the planet's "savings account" — could contribute to avoiding new water crises.
