Illegal wells in Tunisia rise to 3229 in 2024
The number of illegal wells in Tunisia increased from 205 in 2010 to approximately 3,229 in 2024, with the volume of water extracted rising from 205 million cubic meters to 827 million cubic meters over the same period. The expansion of well-drilling activities, driven by lengthy legal procedures, rising irrigation needs, and decreasing rainfall, has facilitated the illegal exploitation of water resources. This situation leads to environmental degradation, water salinization, and a decline in groundwater levels, especially in coastal and southern regions. Currently, the focus is on implementing smart monitoring and management systems to better oversee water use and prevent violations of water resources.
