Britain announces severe drought
The British government has declared a state of "severe drought" in parts of southern England due to the region experiencing an unprecedented heatwave and a severe shortage of rainfall throughout 2026, the longest on record since 1836. The conditions have caused the water levels in two major reservoirs to drop to less than 20%, threatening supplies to over 400,000 homes, with areas such as Cornwall, Devon, Dorset, Somerset, East Sussex, and West Sussex being affected. The announcement comes after the country recorded its highest temperatures and a historic summer, with rainfall continuing to decline and placing immense pressure on water resources.
