Olive Oil Decline Prompts Action
The Ministry of Agriculture, Water Resources, and Fisheries has launched emergency interventions to combat Olive Tree Wilt Disease, which has been detected in production areas within the Maloulsh district in Mahdia Governorate. The aim of these measures is to limit the spread of the disease and protect healthy plantations through conducting health inspections, containing infected hotspots, pruning affected trees, and safely disposing of pruning residues through burning. The primary cause of the disease is the bacterium _Pseudomonas savastanoi pv. savastanoi_, which manifests on trees as galls and swellings, threatening their growth and productivity—especially when bacteria enter through wounds caused by pruning. The ministry calls on farmers to remain vigilant, conduct early monitoring, expand inspection teams across all production areas, and requests compensation for affected farmers, all in an effort to reduce the disease’s impact on national olive oil production.
