Paris schools face sexual assault scandal
The New York Times has revealed the widening crisis of sexual abuse in Paris's public schools, with authorities investigating 179 allegations of abuse within schools as of October 2026. Seventy-four of the 14,400 staff members involved in extracurricular activities have been suspended, most on a temporary basis; two of them have been convicted of crimes involving children. The investigations included a complaint from a 3-year-old girl and led to the interrogation of 44 children and the suspension of 16 employees, with two of them arrested. Officials have acknowledged failures in vetting staff backgrounds and resumes, as part of ongoing investigations involving local officials, aimed at improving hiring and training procedures following increasing complaints and escalating crisis.
