Ethiopia Challenges Tunisia Dates Threat
Ethiopia is entering the date market with a long-term plan involving an cultivated area reaching 25,000 hectares, aiming to become a main competitor to Tunisia in the sector. Despite significant horizontal expansion, Ethiopia's main challenges relate to product quality, infrastructure, and competitiveness in the global market. While Tunisia is characterized by high marketing value and worldwide fame for its dates, such as "Deglet Nour," Ethiopia relies on building its reputation, improving product quality, and developing export logistics, especially given its geographic location and shipping costs. However, the financial and qualitative reputation of Tunisian dates remains dependent on technological and marketing advancements, as Tunisian dates are considered a rare "brown gold" that is difficult to imitate, despite Ethiopia's efforts to diversify its economy and expand date production.
