France protests: 1,800 arrests amid violence
Paris and other French cities experienced unprecedented acts of violence on Saturday, including street vandalism, car burnings, and shop lootings, in protest against the rising cost of living. More than 1,800 people were detained during these events, which caused damages amounting to hundreds of millions of euros, including fires in historic buildings and public facilities in several cities. The protests elicited mixed reactions from political parties; the far right condemned the chaos, while the left called for an end to looting. Tensions are rising ahead of the presidential elections scheduled for next year. Authorities confirmed that violence is unacceptable and are working to bring those responsible to justice.
