Tunisia Djerba Attack Verdicts
The terrorist attack against the Ghriba Synagogue on Djerba Island in May 2023 has been reopened through the issuance of new rulings by the Court of Appeal in Tunis, which have increased the penalties for some of the defendants. The court sentenced the fiancée of the perpetrator and the individual who communicated with him to an extended prison term of 10 years, along with imposing administrative supervision for five years. Additionally, the penalty for a third defendant was increased from two to six years. Furthermore, the court convicted the fourth defendant of six years in prison after overturning a previous ruling of case dismissal against her. The incident occurred on May 9, 2023, when a police officer shot and killed a colleague and fired shots near the mosque, resulting in the death and injury of several victims. The case highlighted the importance of securing sensitive sites during religious and tourism visits.
