Ebola Spreads in Africa WHO Calls for Meeting
The Nigerian health authorities announced the detection of the country's first case of Ebola virus in the current outbreak, following laboratory confirmation of a woman who arrived in Abuja from Uganda. The strain circulating is Bundibugyo, linked to the outbreak that has been ongoing since May in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The symptoms appeared in the patient on October 7, and tests confirmed her infection on October 20. She has been placed in isolation and is receiving treatment, with enhanced health measures being implemented at the medical facility. These developments come amid a call from the African Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to hold a high-level meeting on October 28 to strengthen collaboration and response to the Ebola outbreak, which is currently affecting multiple regions across Africa. The World Health Organization continues to issue warnings about the need for vigilance and increased surveillance, while refraining from imposing travel or trade restrictions.
