Regional Conference in Sousse Urges Alternative Drug Strategies
Nadia Mahjoub, a lawyer at the Court of Appeal in Sousse, revealed during a regional conference that the phenomenon of drug trafficking and consumption is increasing despite the existence of numerous laws and regulations. Over the first nine months of 2026, more than 101 kilograms of cocaine were seized, surpassing the total confiscations for the entire year of 2025, which amounted to 94 kilograms. Additionally, 153 kilograms of cannabis and 291,000 drug pills were confiscated, highlighting the urgent need to explore mechanisms and alternatives to address the shortcomings of the legal and security systems. The lawyer emphasized that effective treatment requires identifying the economic and social causes of the phenomenon, promoting awareness, and encouraging alternative approaches to healing that rely on communication, art, music, and mediation roles. These measures aim to help rebuild the human personality of addicts, with the goal of reducing the growing addiction rates and achieving more effective results in combating this issue.
