A wave of controversy has arisen in Egypt regarding the possibility of the national team withdrawing from a match against Iran during the 2026 World Cup, due to celebrations associated with visible support for the LGBTQ+ community, which were organized by FIFA in Seattle. Both the Egyptian and Iranian football federations have confirmed their rejection of any promotional activities supporting LGBTQ+ individuals during the game and have called for the banning of banners and symbols in the stadium. Despite FIFA’s assurances that flags supporting LGBTQ+ rights are permitted, the relations between the two countries share common ground, and the issue remains a subject of debate given the sensitive circumstances.
