Efforts to preserve Cyrene and Apollonia in Libya
Archaeologists in eastern Libya are witnessing efforts to preserve the archaeological sites of Cyrene and Apollonia, both of which face challenges due to limited resources, theft, and damage caused by Storm Daniel in 2023. The sites experienced widespread looting during the chaos following 2011, and many artifacts were moved to secure locations. However, parts of the sites remain threatened, especially as their condition continues to deteriorate due to natural disasters. Teams are working to restore what was damaged by the storm and to protect the sites from ongoing erosion and decline.
