Heatwave causes billions in German losses
The increasing heatwaves caused by climate change are leading to significant economic and health impacts in Germany, where temperatures reach 40 degrees and last longer. This raises energy costs, reduces productivity, and threatens the health of outdoor workers. Cooling systems are still relatively uncommon, with only 6% of homes equipped, while 50% of office buildings rely on them. The study estimates costs ranging from 100 to 200 billion euros between 2026 and 2030. Expert opinions emphasize the importance of implementing long-term measures to protect the economy and public health from the effects of rising temperatures, including improving building designs and developing government policies to strengthen the country’s resilience to climate change.
