Tunisia opposition leader Souha Ben Sidrène gets 25-year term
The Tunisian activist Souad Ben Sdiren has been sentenced to 25 years in prison on charges related to the transitional justice authority she chaired, as part of a judicial campaign targeting human rights figures in Tunisia. This ruling comes amid a backdrop of declining freedoms and the concentration of power by President Qais Saeed since 2021, and is part of an ongoing struggle over the legacy of the Truth and Dignity Commission, which uncovered corruption and repression during the previous administrations. The country’s backslide in human rights has also been condemned by international and local organizations, amid judicial disputes against human rights defenders fighting for democracy and accountability.
