The Italian judiciary has ended a long-standing crisis that lasted over a decade by suspending the 30-year prison sentences against five Libyan citizens, most of whom are former football players. They were released after approximately 11 years of detention. The case was related to charges of human trafficking and facilitating illegal migration following a maritime massacre in 2015 that resulted in the deaths of 49 migrants. Harsh sentences had been handed down against them before their case was reevaluated, leading to an order for their release. This comes as part of efforts to improve cooperation between Libya and Italy regarding the management of maritime borders, which is a key issue in addressing the flows of irregular migration across the Mediterranean.
