Lebanon and Israel agreed, under U.S. sponsorship, on a negotiation framework that includes the withdrawal of Israeli forces from southern Lebanon and the gradual assumption of security responsibilities by the Lebanese army in those areas, as part of efforts to restore Lebanese sovereignty. Although the Lebanese government and Jordan welcomed this step, Hezbollah described the agreement as humiliating and a threat to Lebanon’s sovereignty, blaming Israel for the escalation. It is worth noting that the approval of the agreement came after negotiations in the United States, which involved 14 provisions concerning the deployment of Lebanese forces and the regain of control over territories.
