Far right upset over veiled girl with France team
A scene featuring a veiled girl accompanying the French national team players before the France vs. Sweden match in the 2026 World Cup sparked political and media controversy in France. It was exploited by the far right to criticize the hijab and Islamic ideology. Politicians from the National Rally, including Ahmed Nikelitch and Julie Rechanu, criticized the girl's appearance, considering that wearing the hijab was imposed on her and reflected the imposition of Islamistic ideology on children. Activists and media figures also attacked FIFA for broadcasting the scene, viewing it as a message promoting the hijab, while linking it to anti-Muslim campaigns and the attack on women's rights in France.
