Japan has begun its twenty-first round of discharging treated radioactive water from the Fukushima Daiichi plant into the ocean. The process will continue until July 24, during which approximately 7,800 tons of water containing 1.3 quadrillion becquerels of tritium will be released. This operation follows the nuclear meltdown incident in 2011 caused by an earthquake and tsunami, despite international concerns and opposition. Japan had started discharging contaminated water unilaterally in August 2023, with a total of about 157,000 tons released so far.
