Portugal studies electrical connection with Morocco to address power outages
Portugal is studying with Morocco the possibility of establishing an electrical connection line to enhance the resilience of the Portuguese power grid against potential outages. This initiative aims to diversify energy sources and reduce reliance solely on Spain. This step comes as a response to the limited current electrical interconnection between Portugal and Europe, which accounts for less than 3% of the energy exchange, while the European Union aims to reach 15% by 2030. The project is expected to require a feasibility study to assess costs and benefits, without specifying whether it will involve an underwater cable or leverage Spanish infrastructure.
