French President Emmanuel Macron visited Damascus, beginning his trip with a tour of the Umayyad Mosque alongside Syrian President Ahmed Al-Shir. During the visit, they paid their respects at the shrine of Prophet Yahya and examined a copy of the Holy Qur'an, as part of efforts to strengthen relations between the two countries and to ease tensions after years of war in Syria. Macron's visit is his first since Al-Shir assumed power in late 2024, and it precedes official talks between the two leaders.
