The European Union naval forces launched Operation "Aspis" to safeguard commercial shipping in the Red Sea, following a 20% decline in maritime traffic since the start of the conflict between the United States and Iran. This decrease is due to threats and attacks targeting merchant and oil vessels in the region. Key transit routes such as the Bab el-Mandeb Strait have experienced a deterioration in security, driven by pressure from Iran-backed Houthi forces, which has led to a significant reduction in transit operations since the beginning of this year. The mission aims to restore freedom of navigation and secure vessel passage, amid increasing attacks and the strategic importance of the region.
