In the occupied region of Ceuta, northern Morocco, an unprecedented influx of migrants has occurred, as tens of thousands of Moroccan youths collectively crossed the border following rumors of its opening. This resulted in chaos, with at least 67 migrants lost their lives, dozens injured, and others missing. Local human rights organizations, including the Moroccan Association for Human Rights, confirmed that the mass crossings were carried out with the complicity of Moroccan authorities, and that the failure to protect migrants along with the rise of hate speech are worsening the crisis. The European Union has called for an emergency meeting to discuss the migrant crossings, and the association has also demanded the return of Ceuta and Melilla from Spain as part of the political agenda.
