Four candidates compete for FIFA presidency
FIFA President Gianni Infantino announced a plan for significant investment in major tournaments, which has sparked widespread criticism and challenges from continental federations such as UEFA, CONCACAF, and the Asian Football Confederation. Some associations, like the Netherlands and Denmark, have lost confidence in him. Infantino is running for re-election as FIFA President until 2031, with potential candidates including CONCACAF President Victor Montagliani and Asian Football Confederation President Salman bin Ibrahim. He is also likely to face competition from Paris Saint-Germain President Nasser Al-Khelaifi, who is not officially running. The announcement of the candidates is expected in March 2024. To win the new term, Infantino needs a two-thirds majority. Meanwhile, Secretary-General Matthias Grafström, a close associate of his, may have his chances affected by the outcome.
