Turkish intel uncovers 2016 Erdoğan assassination plot
Turkish intelligence agencies successfully arrested Burkay Kara Tepa, a member of the Gülen organization involved in the attempted assassination of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan during the unsuccessful coup in 2016. They utilized the facial recognition system operated by the Turkish Ministry of Interior, which helped locate his hideout. Surveillance cameras monitored him, and his photograph matched the data in the system with an accuracy rate of up to 83%. After careful tracking, his residence was identified in Afyonkarahisar Province. He was apprehended after attempting to conceal his identity further through changes in his appearance, in a joint operation by security forces. This case reflects the effectiveness of the system in tracking wanted individuals involved in terrorism and organized crime.
