Egyptian families face high private university costs
The article discusses the challenges faced by Egyptian families in funding higher education, especially in light of the low success rates in secondary school and the rising costs of private and national universities. Many families struggle to cover the expenses of top-tier colleges such as medicine and engineering, where annual fees can range from 40,000 to 300,000 Egyptian pounds. The increasing costs of private university education have led many families to abandon their academic aspirations, relying instead on savings or seeking additional sources of income. The article also highlights a decline in secondary school success rates, which limits students’ chances of admission to public universities and pushes them toward private or national universities—options that are often prohibitively expensive. This situation exacerbates the economic pressures on Egyptian families with limited or moderate incomes.
