Sudan loses power after Merowe Dam failure
A major technical malfunction at the Merowe Dam power grid in northern Sudan caused a nationwide blackout affecting several states, including Khartoum. The outage resulted from a fire at the power station that damaged transmission cables. Repairs are expected to take several days, amidst worsening humanitarian conditions due to a heatwave exceeding 40°C, with severe impacts on water supply and hospitals. The Merowe Dam is the country's main source of electricity, and the situation is deteriorating further with recurring airstrikes and infrastructure deterioration since the beginning of the war in 2023.
