Mauritania's Role in Berlin Attack Inquiry
German security authorities have reported that Mauritania has become a potential destination for some Islamists arriving from Europe, as they attempt to join extremist groups in neighboring conflict zones such as Mali and Niger. Investigations indicate the presence of Islamic schools and centers in Nouakchott, where Quranic schools operated by radical preachers are taught, and social media platforms are used to spread radical Salafist ideology. One of the suspects, Abdel Basit, tried to travel to Mauritania to join a militant group but was unable to enter the country and was deported back to Germany. He had planned to join ISIS and appeared in a video pledging allegiance to the organization before carrying out an attack. The investigations confirm that Mauritania has become a transit point through which extremist groups move into conflict regions, raising concerns among European and Arab security agencies.
