Taliban's stance on girls' education after sixth grade
Human Rights Watch has stated that Taliban rule in Afghanistan since 2021 has led to a systematic dismantling of women's and girls' rights. Education beyond sixth grade has been banned, and their work and mobility are restricted, with arbitrary arrests of women on alleged dress code violations. This includes restrictions on participation in public life, a lack of justice and legal protection, as well as crackdowns on freedom of expression and the detention of activists and journalists. Conversely, the Taliban deny these accusations, claiming that their measures are in accordance with Islamic law, and assert that the temporary suspension of girls' education is for their protection. They emphasize that all their actions aim to preserve women's dignity within an Islamic system. International human rights organizations are calling for increased pressure to achieve justice and provide protections for Afghans—especially women and girls—in light of ongoing restrictions and abuses.
