Android phones alerting Egyptians to quake
An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.5 struck eastern Egypt early Monday morning, approximately 40 kilometers north of the city of Suez. The quake lasted for more than 15 seconds, causing the tremors to be felt over wide areas, including Al-Arish. The news that many users in Egypt received alerts on their mobile phones before feeling the tremors has raised questions about how Android phones can detect earthquakes before they happen. The accelerometer technology in phones—originally used for adjusting screen orientation—is now employed in alert systems that send quick warnings upon detecting vibrations similar to the primary waves of earthquakes, which often precede secondary waves and can cause damage. It is worth noting that Google has launched an earthquake warning system in Egypt and several other countries, delivering alerts to Android users when strong and nearby tremors are detected. To make the most of this system, users are advised to activate the alert features on their Android devices and follow safety procedures such as remaining in place when warned, avoiding standing at doorways, crouching and taking cover if caught in the quake, and staying away from tall buildings and objects when outdoors.
