Lebanon President Urges Justice on Explosive Anniversary
On the sixth anniversary of the Beirut Port explosion, Lebanese President Joseph Aoun issued a call to the judiciary for further investigations and the urgent issuance of arrest warrants, holding the judiciary accountable for upholding justice and holding the negligent accountable. He emphasized that justice should go beyond revenge and serve as a means to fully uncover the truth. Prime Minister Najib Mikati also stressed that justice should not be halted due to delays, and that accountability will include everyone without exception, despite the political complexities that have hindered the investigation. The disaster resulted in the death of over 220 people and injuries to more than 6,000, with some officials being identified as responsible despite knowing the risks but failing to take action. The judicial investigation concluded in late March 2023, with charges brought against around 70 officials, though it is still under review. Families of the victims continue to demand justice and the cessation of political interventions.
