Infantino seeks Trump's backing to remain FIFA chief
The article reveals that Gianni Infantino, President of FIFA, is seeking to secure support from Donald Trump's administration to maintain his position amid increasing pressures following the failure of the project to sell the commercial rights for the World Cup. Infantino attempted to reach out to Trump without success, aiming to use football as a tool for American soft power, but his true goal is to safeguard his future as FIFA president. He proposed a plan to create a new entity for broadcasting and marketing rights, selling a stake of it to Jared Kushner for over $4 billion. However, this plan faced widespread opposition and caused discontent within FIFA, with internal moves underway to oust him. It has also been reported that the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) voted to boycott the 2030 World Cup in protest of the project, although this has not been officially confirmed.
