Intense Push for 14-Day Gaza Ceasefire
The article discusses the efforts of mediators, the United Nations, and the United States to achieve a 14-day ceasefire between Israel and the Gaza Strip, with the aim of implementing provisions of a roadmap related to a ceasefire and a second phase of the Sharm El-Sheikh agreement. The efforts focus on convincing Israel to agree to a plan that includes arms restrictions and halting military operations, despite Israel's escalated attacks that have resulted in the deaths of 21 Palestinians since the ceasefire began, the destruction of hundreds of homes, and an increase in civilian casualties. The negotiations reveal that Netanyahu's government is delaying by making the conditions more complex, while the parties are working to ensure Israel's commitment to the terms of the agreement and to establish a lasting ceasefire, while monitoring the escalation of fighting and statements condemning the Israeli escalation, which obstructs progress towards the hoped-for peace.
