Three leopards die in Japan heatwave
Three lionesses died at Tama Zoo in the Tokyo area within one week. It is believed that heat stress caused by the severe heatwave and rising temperatures in Japan and parts of East Asia was the primary reason. The lions exhibited symptoms such as loss of appetite and fatigue, highlighting how wildlife suffers from the effects of high temperatures. The deceased showed signs of dehydration and organ failure, while treatment is ongoing for the remaining animals. Japan recorded record high temperatures this summer, exceeding 40°C for extended periods. These unprecedented heat levels have increased risks to the health of both people and animals, amid the ongoing El Niño phenomenon, which is causing extreme weather events worldwide.
