Impact if Emmett Till Had Survived
The exhibition and library "If Emmett Till Had Lived: Freedom on American Soil" at the Museum of Contemporary Photography at Columbia College Chicago reimagines an alternative life for Emmett Till, the African American boy who was murdered in 1955 at the age of 14 after enduring torture and disfigurement during a visit to his family in Mississippi. His death profoundly impacted the Civil Rights Movement in the United States. Through a curated selection of photographs, the exhibition aims to imagine what Till’s life might have been like had he survived—ranging from his childhood to becoming a father and an observer of social and cultural shifts, such as Martin Luther King Jr.’s movement and the first American presidential election with African American candidates. The project is built on collaboration with his relatives and features images that reflect Black life and the history of racial discrimination. It encourages viewers to confront history through documentation that humanizes the victims and honors their memory in a way that portrays the journey of a free human being within American society.
