Merowe Dam failure worsens Sudan's electricity crisis

The Merowe Dam power grid in Sudan has suffered extensive damage due to a massive fire, which led to a blackout affecting most states. The entire system went offline after the transformer cables were destroyed, causing significant disruptions in the country's electricity supply. The engineering maintenance team is working to replace the missing parts and restore power, with repair efforts expected to take at least a week given the extent of the damage—especially since ongoing conflict between the Sudanese Army and the Rapid Support Forces has destroyed more than half of the sector's facilities, reducing generation capacity from 2,500 MW to 1,900 MW. The government is closely monitoring the repair efforts and aims to restore power to Northern State within two days to ensure the agricultural season, noting that damages to hydropower sources were less severe compared to thermal generation.
