The attempt to assassinate Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan in 2016 has been referenced, with terrorist Burkay Kara Tepa admitting to his involvement in the attack and his travels between Turkey and the United States. He visited the organization leader, Fethullah Gulen, in Pennsylvania. He explained that the operation aimed to capture Erdoğan alive, and that he escaped after the failure of the attempt, using a fake identity and camouflage. He was later arrested in Afyonkarahisar during a security raid. The investigation confirmed that he suffers from psychological disorders and feels remorse for his role in the assassination attempt, while the organization is exonerated from the blame of Gulen.
