Iran and Oman reach new Strait agreement
Iran and Oman have reached a temporary understanding to organize navigation through the Strait of Hormuz. This arrangement differs from the protocols that have been in place for the past 60 years and aims to facilitate the passage of commercial ships in a safer and more flexible manner. The agreement stipulates the closure of the northern and southern routes, with most of the passage passing through Iranian waters and the remainder through Omani waters. It also reaffirms that Iran will exercise its sovereignty over the strait during times of war, while maritime traffic will continue normally during peacetime. This understanding is considered a provisional step that may last from two months to more than four, depending on how the United States prepares to uphold its commitments. This development comes amid Iran’s effective control of the strait since February, which has been disrupting global shipping movement.
