Austria and Slovakia hit record highs
Austria and Slovakia experienced a historic heatwave during the current extreme temperatures sweeping through Central Europe, with both countries recording temperatures exceeding 41°C. In Austria, a high of 41.2°C was registered in Bad Deutsch-Altenburg, surpassing the 41°C recorded in Vienna. Slovakia, on the other hand, reached 41.4°C in the town of Kamenica nad Hronom, breaking the previous record of 41.3°C. The heatwave has caused severe climatic impacts, including accelerated crop ripening and deteriorating conditions for farmers, as well as a decline in business activity and a reduction in the number of customers. These effects are further exacerbated by increasing drought and limited rainfall, which are attributed to climate change—itself responsible for the intensification and frequency of extreme weather events.
