Lebanese authorities handed over to Syria a former senior officer in the Syrian army, Adel Aissa, who is accused of committing intentional murders and torture during Bashar Assad's rule, in the first such transfer since Assad's fall in 2024. Aissa, who served as the commander of the 17th Division and later the Syrian Arab Army forces in Deir Ezzor, had been detained in Beirut after approaching the Syrian embassy. He has been charged with premeditated murder and torture leading to death, and is now under investigation in Damascus. This transfer comes after Syrian pressure on Lebanon and is considered a precedent that could open the door to pursuing dozens of former officials from the Syrian regime who fled to Lebanon following the fall of Assad's government.
