Khoddam's memoirs discuss the transfer of the Lebanon file from President Hafez Assad, Bashar's father, to Bashar himself. They detail how a meeting took place between Bashar and Hariri in July 2004, during which Bashar issued threats to "break a bone" of anyone who defies his wishes—particularly regarding the Lebanese presidential candidate. Khoddam indicated that Bashar affirmed he was the one choosing Lebanon's leadership and that no party was permitted to work toward the election of a president other than Emile Lahoud. He also mentioned that he requested Hafez Assad to relieve him of the Lebanon file due to his stance on Lahoud, which ultimately led the responsibility to be transferred to Bashar.
