South Korea Engages in Arctic Trade
South Korea's Ministry of Oceans announced that it plans to conduct its first trial voyage across the Arctic Circle this week, aiming to test a shipping route that could shorten commercial trips between Asia and Europe to approximately 45 days. This route has the potential to cut about 10 days and 7,000 kilometers from the traditional passage through the Suez Canal. This step comes amid global shipping disruptions caused by the war in the Middle East and responds to China's initiatives to utilize northern routes when Arctic ice melts. However, environmental experts have warned that these voyages could accelerate ice melt and increase negative ecological impacts.
