The Iranian authorities have carried out the execution of a foreign national convicted of killing security personnel during the protests that swept Iran in January, which resulted in the deaths of thousands. This comes amid a surge in executions across the country since the outbreak of war with the United States and Israel in February, with Iran recording the highest number of executions since 1989 in 2025, having executed at least 1,639 people. Iran faces international criticism, particularly from the European Union and human rights organizations, over its widespread use of the death penalty, while the Iranian government dismisses these critiques and considers them to be support for terrorism.
