The Vatican expressed its concern over the difficulties facing the implementation of the framework agreement between Lebanon and Israel, which was reached in June through American mediation. The agreement stipulates the disarmament of Hezbollah, a gradual withdrawal of Israel from Lebanese territory, and the deployment of the Lebanese Army. However, Israel continues to carry out airstrikes and establish a security zone inside Lebanon. The Lebanese president called on the Pope to support efforts to implement the agreement and to cease Israeli attacks. The visit comes after a bilateral meeting and in preparation for discussions with the Italian Prime Minister to address the future of UNIFIL forces in Lebanon.
