Syria has announced the commencement of destroying a batch of chemical materials linked to the Bashar Assad regime. This step is considered the first of its kind in over a decade and comes as part of its commitment to international agreements and the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons. Syrian officials indicated that the destruction process is being carried out within the framework of technical verification procedures and reflects a political shift in Damascus's approach to enhance its international responsibility. The United Nations confirmed that, for the first time since 2014, inspection teams are verifying the destruction of chemical munitions in the country, following the discovery of new facilities and materials related to a plan for the final elimination of chemical weapons. However, tensions with Israel—whose ongoing attacks hinder Syrian nuclear verification efforts—add to the challenges faced in completing the destruction process and confirming Syria's removal of chemical weapons.
