The article explains that Russia has been shipping over 10 million barrels of oil via the North Sea route since the beginning of the year to bolster its supplies to China amid disruptions in Iranian oil exports and risks to shipping lanes in the Middle East. This short maritime route connects ports in western Russia to Asian markets, especially through Arctic waters, and serves as an alternative to the more frequently used Suez Canal corridor from July to October. Overall, Russia transported about 13 million barrels along this route during the past navigation season, and it is currently targeting the shipment of all its cargoes to China, with expectations of additional deliveries to other Asian countries such as India in the future. The recent increase in China's purchases of Russian oil is attributed to the reduced Iranian oil supplies and caution around passing through the Strait of Hormuz, which has led to higher premiums for ESPO crude oil offered to China. Russia promotes the North Sea route as a safe commercial alternative amid geopolitical tensions and security risks affecting traditional maritime routes.
